Hairy Woodpecker

June 11th 2013 we went to Oak Mountain State Park just south of Birmingham.  We took a long stroll
through the woods, about a 5 mile hike and stumbled upon this little female woodpecker. A great specimen! That wanted to be photographed.

Hairy Woodpeckers are contrastingly black and white. The black wings are checkered with white; the head has two white stripes (and, in males, a flash of red toward the back of the head). A large white patch runs down the center of the black back. This bird is actually quite common and found nearly everywhere!
